ECE Imaging on EAST

 

 

Installation of the ECEI system on EAST was completed near the beginning of 2012, and data collection began in May 2012. The electronics are designed to collect ECE signals within a nominal bandwidth of 90 – 150 GHz. The array consists of 24 vertical (poloidal) by 16 radial channels. EAST utilizes non-inductive heating and current drive schemes such as electron cyclotron resonance heating (ECRH), electron cyclotron current drive (ECCD), and lower hybrid current drive (LHCD). The microwaves launched by these heating techniques fall within the bandwidth of the ECEI electronics. As of May 2012, notch filters protect the electronics from frequencies relevant to EC heating and current drive. An upgrade of the ECEI electronics is planned to additionally shield the system from LHCD-relevant frequencies.

DATA

 

As of May 2012, the EAST ECEI system has been online and collecting data. Below is sample data taken during a sawtooth crash in a discharge with plasma current = 0.4MA and 0.45MW of ion-cyclotron heating.
